Why do I need a security clearance?

Q: Why do I need a security clearance?

A: Your need a security clearance whenever you work in a job where you have a potential to cause damage to national security, or in a job where you can gain access to classified information. You need a clearance because of executive order 10450, signed by President Dwight Eisenhower on April 17, 1953. Executive order 10450 gives the U.S. government the authority to require clearances of employees who request access to national security or sensitive information.

We apply for a clearance because we, software QA/test engineers, don't work for money alone. We apply for a clearance because we're attracted to the vision, ideals, and engineering challenges of the project. We apply for a clearance because we want to help the government, and because we respect and trust the government. We apply for a clearance because government contracts often require security clearances.
